![]() ![]() Between the beginning of her first memoir and the end of her second, she went from an obscure girlhood in Manhattan to a position of immense influence in California culinary circles. ![]() ![]() The book begins in the late 1970s, when Reichl began writing restaurant reviews for New West, a California magazine, and ends about a decade later, by which time she had become well-established as restaurant critic for the Los Angeles Times. The same narrator is very much present in Comfort Me With Apples, but the tone is different - darker, less humorous, preoccupied with "the success machine" - and so is the cast of characters, many members of which are entirely familiar to anyone with even passing knowledge of American gastronomy. The first, Tender at the Bone, published in 1998, is a story of youthful adventure, misadventure and self-discovery, populated with engaging characters, few of whom can be familiar to many readers, told by a writer with a splendid storytelling gift made all the more appealing by her capacity to make fun of herself. The contrast between Ruth Reichl's first and second memoirs is interesting and instructive. ![]()
